KBZ Bank: The First Myanmar Bank to Go Regional
When KBZ Bank received licences to open representative offices in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other markets, it wanted to be seen as ready to stand alongside ASEAN's banking leaders. Ruder Finn Era pitched international financial media in each market, securing 90 clippings in tier-one media across four markets and a project ROI above 1500%.
The challenge
KBZ Bank, Myanmar's largest private bank, had secured licences to open representative offices in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and beyond, the first Myanmar bank to expand in this way. The licences were a milestone, but the bigger prize was perception.
Regional investors, correspondent banks and regulators had little frame of reference for a Myanmar bank. KBZ needed the expansion to signal that it was ready to be a financial peer to ASEAN's banking leaders, and it needed that message to land abroad and at home at the same time.
Our solution
Ruder Finn Era, then ERA Communications, treated the announcement as the bank's first multi-market financial communications campaign rather than a domestic press release, with a single narrative of readiness and regional ambition adapted for each audience.
The team identified and pitched the most appropriate international business and financial media in each country where a licence had been granted, so that coverage appeared in the markets KBZ was entering and was then reflected back to Myanmar as external validation.
The programme continued as offices opened, keeping the story alive rather than treating the licences as a one-day event.
The results
Ninety clippings, all in tier-one media across four markets, gave KBZ regional credibility at a project return of more than 1500%.
